I created my "Coffee Shop" Leadership blog after being invited by six student leaders from Life West University in San Francisco to meet them at a local coffee shop and share my thoughts on leadership. Our hour together was stimulating, refreshing and energizing--the coffee and the dialogue! So, join us for coffee and let's talk/blog about leadership!
Soaring high or Stuck?
Are you soaring high? Or, stuck and don't recognize it? Look closely--the dragonfly is stuck in a cobweb! What about you as a Leader? How do you see yourself? How do others see you?

Hello! Addison, Melanie and Alvin here!
ReplyDeleteHere's what we came up with while brainstorming in Life West's new fitness facility. (and special guests as they poke their head in here)
Melanie: Commit yourself to Excellence. The quality of your work is directly proportional to your commitment to excellence. Spend each day leading yourself with that commitment for pursuit of excellence.
Dr. Ball: Learn to ask quality questions! And it's always important to look at how you are framing things up and be willing and ready to re-frame your thoughts.
Don't perceive things to be difficult - see them as challenges and shift your mindset when needed.
Alvin: Know and believe in yourself! Become aware of who you really are and accept your current glory and be open to the changes you will go through as you evolve as a leader. A personal belief that I hold dear is that "I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE". and it is with that belief and an open mindset that I go forth to look for creative new ways to shift the health consciousness level of the world.
Addison: Surrender to the fact that nothing is impossible. Surrender to the truth that we are all born leaders. Every moment is a life changing moment. Surrender.
Alvin: I think it's important to realize that we are all connected and that by improving myself or helping out another - everyone gets lifted up. There is no real independent action that we can make. We are continually affecting everything around us - with that, realize that in every aspect that we improve and build up ourselves - we improve and build up everyone else around us too.

I think it is really important to steer clear of the "pity parties" or should you need to sulk, do so with a time limit and then take full responsibility.
ReplyDeleteYour purpose is your life calling and the greater the purpose, the more is at stake when you let unfavorable life situations run you. Stephen Covey says "between stimulus and response there is always choice" and Viktor Frankl says that human beings come equipped with the "defiant power of the human spirit".
Both are referring to the fact that, in every situation, we are the have the opportunity to take a stand and make great things happen. I believe doing this is fundamental and everything else (being a good spouse, child, citizen, etc.) naturally falls into place and if they don't at least the conditions are set up for success.
Cheers,
Stan
GREAT input!
ReplyDeleteSome additional thoughts for you:
-Commitment to excellence, every day, all the time--the minute we walk by a mistake, we have just set a "new standard" and it is ALWAYS lower!
-Ask questions--BE curious! Think differently. Instead of thinking "outside the box" -- change your thinkingn to "no box!"
-challenges--opportunities to excel, build character!
-everyone in this world can make a difference because we all have PURPOSE and POTENTIAL! Be creative and innovative!
-the Law of Physics has no boundaries!
-no pity parties--agree! "Things happen" that are out of our control--but we "own" our responses and our choices! "Things that happen" might not be "our fault" but they are "our fight"--not to perpetuate or pass on.
General:
ReplyDeleteThe comments above are certainly helpful in the cases of victims of child abuse as well. Having been abused at the hands of my father many years ago, I found that I had two choices in dealing with the pain of that time. Use the abuse as a crutch--poor me--or use it as a cannon to move forward. I chose the latter and have enjoyed a life full of love and promise! Events of our live are both good and bad. As Chuck Swindall has said, "Life is 10 per cent what happens to you and 90 per cent of how you react to it." We make the life we want!
Alvin--somehow your blog entry did not hit my email--sorry for delay!
ReplyDeleteExcellence--BE The standard setter and never, never apologize for high standards! a Great book--IN SEARCH OF EXCELLENCE.
Ask quality questions! Amen! Don't peck people to death, but ask questions to expand yours and their knowledge! As a boss I asked questions NOT to micro-manage but to inspire more thought, learn and be able to communicate to others in more depth what we offered as a team!
Challenges--are opportunities to excel!
Believe in yourself--first person you must lead is you. You must respect and love yourself before you are able to do this with others. Otherwise, insecurities will surface quickly--that does NOT mean you have to know everything or be able to everything--it means you must DISCOVER your strengths (and share with others to help them develop) and MANAGE your weaknesses (recognize you have them, find people who are strong in the areas you are weak and let them help develop you!). EVERY person on the face of the earth has purpose and potential....it is about choices and personal decisions!
Nothing is impossible--see it, believe it, allow it and it will happen. Born with the ability to be leaders in many capacities. Leadership is both BORN (chemistry, personality, etc) and LEARNED (behavior is learned and leadership is traits PLUS skills...that which we inherently possess with what we have learned)...that is what gives us great HOPE!
Connected--yes! STEAL shamelessly (those skillsets and leader principles you see in others that you respect and admire) and SHARE selflessly (be willing to share what works for you with others and let them take it as their own)
THANK YOU for stirring thought! I have been on the road non-stop and must have just missed the email. Be WELL and Healthy!
Ginger--
ReplyDeleteBecky come lately to the blogspot!
Been on the road--no excuses!
I enjoy Chuck Swindoll's material very, very much! Thank you for sharing your personal story and thank you for sitting with me and helping me get this blogspot into action! The students at LIFE West inspired me and you helped me make it happen! TEAM--Together Everyone Achieves More!
Life is a choice!
Leadership is a choice!
As I have mentioned to people who have been victims (spouse abuse, child abuse, assault, etc)--it is NOT your fault, but it is YOUR FIGHT! You chose to overcome!
thanks for entering the blog net!
